I've been using this for a while now - if drawing comics / graphic novels is your thing, it's a no-brainer. Beats the competition hands down.
Like all things, you need to get a handle on it, but it won't take long. Tech notes: I'm using this on a late 2013 model macbook pro with a retina screen, running Yosemite 10.10.1, and using a Cintiq 13HD pen tablet. Pros:. Relatively inexpensive compared to other offerings that allow you to do the same.
The 3-D materials - 3d poseable models, props and scenery to arrange and sketch from - really helpful. Highly geared to output in various printed formats, so includes page numbering, binding options that sort of thing. I want to say again - geared to printed output - it will look like what you drew, and fit on your media Cons:. Not quite retina ready - there is slight rastering on the computer screen.
I don't mind, as I always open it on the Cintiq. Not suitable for colourful painting / fine arts.
Please note Manga Studio only 'officialy' supports OS X up to 10.8, if you are running a later version (like me) it will throw-up an annoying whinge message when it starts, with 10.10 as the current version and 10.11 about to be released it doesn't give a good first impression. (on-line) Activation is required, this is annoying as every other OS X Applications I use will allow me to install on more than one machine (licensed to a person, not a machine), also my main work-station (an iMac) isn't always connected to the Web. Works with my Wacom One Tablet (even though it isn't in the list of compatible devices). Bottom Line, works OK (so far), but realy doesn't give a good first impression on OS X. Not suitable for colourful painting / fine arts. Manga Studio EX is the same as Clip Studio Paint EX. The former name is being phased out and replaced by the latter, but the software is identical.
Purchasing this Manga Studio EX box thus entitles for free updates of Clip Studio Paint EX, using the installation code contained inside the box. Updates are available on the website of distributor SmithMicro. These Manga Studio EX boxes are old by now (mine apparently from 2013), and therefore users will need to update them anyway. The main reason for me buying this boxed version was the price, which was more competitive than if I had directly purchased the software from the distributor.
The program itself is amazing (still much to learn though) and works fine on Windows 8.1 with a Wacom Cintiq 13HD tablet. Bottom Line, works OK (so far), but realy doesn't give a good first impression on OS X. As an illustrator I have been on the look out for an alternative to the ridiculously priced photoshop cs series and I think I may well have found what I'm looking for, I'm still exploring the software but there is an abundance of tutorials on YouTube that can assist. Regarding Manga itself I love the UI and the fact that you can adjust the background to a darker palette similar the CS6, the choices of pens and pencils are fantastic perfect for illustration work and now they have introduced natural media which looks great. If you are serious about cartooning, comics, concept art and anything in between then this is for you, I'm excited about getting into it.a must have, well done smith micro 10/10. I got 5EX as an upgrate to Debute 4.0. While it does have lots of extra features such as gradients, eyedropper tool and a very useful 3D model system the load time of files is awful compared to 4.0. Before I could load an entire 100 page comic story and edit individual pages, now it takes 2 minutes to open the entire story into memory- duplicating pages used to take an instant and now takes a load bar.
The file export is particularly bad- you used to be able to batch export to jpg with ease, now a single file takes several long seconds, and the resize option is a joke. I'm having to save comics full size and make them web ready in a separate program as 5EX saves them as jagged and weird, even with the highest settings. An upgrade should be better, not slower!
